LowCarb: Carbon-Aware Scheduling of Serverless Functions

Serverless computing is rapidly gaining traction in cloud platforms. While prior work has focused on improving performance by proactively “keeping alive” functions in memory to reduce execution latency, the sustainability implications of such strategies remain under-explored. Serverless computing introduces unique carbon footprint sources and trade-offs between performance and sustainability. We present LowCarb, a reinforcement learning-based solution that co-optimizes serverless function performance and carbon footprint, resolving this conflict and achieving results within 15% of optimality.
